News was received yesterday _ of the death of Captain Richard Riddiford, M.C. The late Captain Riddiford 'has seen considerable service, and was, prior to his illness. A.D.C. to Major-General Sir Andrew Russell, Commanding tho Now Zealand Division. He was a eon of the late Mr. Richard Riddiford, and was t'hiyty-threo yell's of age. He is survived -by a sister (Mrs. Lovin, of Feilding). Ho left New Zealand with tho IStli Mounted Reinforcements.

Mr. Duncan Neven, manager for Mademoiselle Antonia Dolores, the celebrated French soprano, has arrived in Wellington from Sydney to complete preparations for tho Dominion tour of the singer. It is over five years since Dolores was in New Zealand.

A. Press Association telegram from Hokitika states:—Last night. Mr. Arthur N. Harrop, chief draughtsman of the Lands and Survey Department, Hokitika, died after a sudden seizure at the'bowling tournament, at Greymouth yesterday afternoon.' He was -ID years of age.

News has been received from England of tho death from influenza of Captain Richard Riddiford, M.C., cousin of Messrs. Eric an<l Vivian Riddiford, of Wellington, aud Mr. Dan. Riddiford, of the Wairarapa, and son of the late Mr. Richard Riddiford (who died in • 1885). Tho deceased was a farmer on the AYairarapa East; Coast. When he volunteered for service early in the war ho left hi? farm in the hands of a manager. The deceased, who was single, was about 35 yeaw of age.

Captain Phillips, ex-commander of the Makura, was presented at Sydney l'ecently -with a wallet well filled with Government' war bonds by friends and persons who had sailed with him, as a mark of personal esteem and in recognition of many courtesies during the years ho commanded Union Company's ships.

A presentation was made to Mr. A. D. Macfarlanc, chief elork in the Nelson Lands Office, by tho Nelson District Law Society, on the eve of his departure for Palmerston North to take charge of the branch of the Public .Trust Office there. Messrs; A. 0, Maginnity and W. S. Milner made tho presentation on behalf of the subscribers, and incidentally' referred to the assistance given by the recipient in connection with the. settlement of soldiers on (he land.

On tho eve of his departure) from tho Soldiers' Financial Assistance Board, Mr. 'J'. M. Gault, chief clerk, was i'arewelled l>y the staff, and presented with a sold watch, a pipe, and a tobacco pouch. Tho presentation was made by tho secretary, Mr. R. J. Wills, who referred in very complimentary terms to Mr. Gault's loyalty and tho creditable manner in which lie had carried out his arduous duties. Mr. Wilts stated that the board was deeply indebted to Mr. Gault for his services. and wished him every success. Mr. Gault,'who has accepted ilio position of secretary and accountant to tho City Carriage and Motor 'Works, Ltd., suitably replied, and feelingly referred to his pleasant associations with the members of the board and the staff.
