Anxious that war memorials erected in brent Britain Bhould not through lack of competent guidance clash with the spirit of the past and that, however simple, they should express the emotion of tho present and hope of the future, without losing touch' with tho past, tho War Memorials Conimittle, of which Sir Edward Poynter, R.A., is chairman, will give assistance and' advice as to the general scope and character of memorials advise 011 their suitability for specific "tos. genarlty further an organised effort throughout the country to make the memorials worthy of their great occasion.

The designs of all memorials should be entrusted to competent artists, and, the committee urge, should express tho ideals fought for by the' free nations of tho world, and while they speak to future {fenerations of the courage and patriotism of thoso who have died, thoy should not sacrifice any of' that older beauty which is England's legacy from an immemorial past. Diocesan committees are being appointed to asrisl the clergy in securing the highest standard of memorials in churches and cathedrals, and the Wat Memorials Committee hope to co-operate with these and other committees in all tho great provincial centres, and to have the sympathy and help' of public authorities and of the clergy and laity, throughout .tho country toward? tho attainment of the object in view.
