Colonel B. Logan, Administrator of Samoa, who is. at present on leave in Auckland, is expected to visit Wellington next week.

Mr. A. W. Bennett, general manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd., Christchurch, is on a business visit to Wellington.

It is reported that Major Alick Wilkie, of Ashburton, who left with the Main Body (Wellington Mounted Rifles), has been nominated to compile the history of the N.Z.B.F. in Egypt.

Councillor and Mrs. W. T. Hildreth have left on a holiday trip to the southern lakes.

. The Rev. R. H. Catherwood, of FeaIherston, has- been elected Moderator of 'the Wairarapa Presbytery for the ensuing year. The following will represent the Wairarapa Presbyteryat the General Assembly, to be held at Christchurch :— The Rev. Messrs. Catherwood (Featherston), M'Gregor (Martinborougli), • Welsh (Pahiatua), and Stowell (Picton); and Messrs. Atkinson (Masterton) and Bruce (Kopuaranga).

Captain W. H. Lea, a commander in the service of the Commonwealth and: Dominion Line, who had for eighteen months or so been a prisoner of war in Germany, left Copenhagen on December 16 for Leith, Scotland. Captain Lea, who was master of the steamer Port Adelaide when she was torpedoed, was captured and subsequently interned.

Mr. J. C. Dickinson, headmaster of the Ponsonby School, is retiring from the service on superannuation at the end of the present week. Mr. Dickinson lias been in the service of the Auckland Education Board for 36 years, and has been headmaster of the Ponsonby School for .19 years. He occupied the position of school. inspector for ten years.

Private letters by last mail state that Captain James B. W. Roberton. second son of Dr. Ernest Roberton, of Auckland, had been awarded the D.S.O. On the outbreak of war, Captain Roberton was at Cambridge University, and at once joined King Edward's Horse. Gaining a commission lie was posted to the 11th Northumberland Fusiliers as secondlieutenant, and whilst on service has been' promoted first lieutenant and captain. For some time past his battalion lias been engaged on the Italian front. Dr. E. Roberton, by last advices, was still-'on duty at the New. Zealand Stationary Hospital in France, and expected to return to New Zealand about March.

An early colonist of the Dominion, Mr. George Turner Croft, late of Lower Hutt, died recently in Auckland. Mr. Croft, who was 73 years of age, arrived from London in the ship Hereford, in 1875, and was for.a number of years engaged as a builder and contractor at Christchurch. Removing later to Wellington, he • continued his business there for a number of. years. , At .the outbreak of the Boer War he, was! on his return from a holiday to'.Englnnd, and as the •vessel called at Cape Town he disembarked and joined the Light Horse, with which he served for over a year. Ho was then 55 years of age. He then returned to New Zealand, and seven years ago took up his residence in Auckland.
