THE PEACE CELEBRATIONS
DISCUSSED BY CHRTSTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL. By Telograpli-Pre6s Association, 1 ,i Christctiurch, February 10. At the mcetintr of the City Council tonight a committee recommended that tho council should spend up to .£IOOO on the erection of nrches, poles, and bunting, and an additional ,£IOOO on illuminations in connection with the peace celebrations. Councillor O'Sullivan (one of the Labour members) objected to the expenditure of so much money in this way. Ho would sooner Rive ,£2OOO to the Return-. Ed Soldiers' Association. Councillor Herbert, another Labour member, said that there were hundreds of parents in the oily who would hato the jnbiliation. Their sons would never come back to them. He rather favoured a competitive display by children and business concerns. He moved as an Amendment that the sum to be spent on the peace celebrations be JSIOOO. The Mayor said that the scheme could be utilised also for the visits of Lord' Jellicoo and the Prince of Wales. The committee's report was adopted, ••■with one dissentient.
