RIFLE SHOOTING

WELLINGTON TEAMS' CHAMPIONSHIP. •■■■ The senior championship teams' match' or the Wellington Rifle Clubs' Union was held at the Miramar Range on Saturday atternoon,. when four teams, representing the Petone, Karori, Suburbs, and Old jx avals Rifle Clubs, competed. The hopeful prospects of fine shooting weather were not realised, and .before the shooting attho 300 yards range, was completed tho wind had freshened considerably. As a result. many promising scores were spoilt at one or other of, the' two longer distances. The Karori team emerged from the first stage with a lead of 13 points from the Petone Club, the Old Navals being third, while the Suburbs team, which.was looked upon to make a pood showing, dropped 33 points bshind the leaders. The Old Navals commenced encouragingly at 500 yards with scores of 32 and 34 'by Riflemen Frahklyn and Standidge respectively, the latter having 65 to. his credit for the two distances. It was quite on the cards at this stage tliat the Old Navals team, which has not hitherto shown to good advantage in championship competitipns, might fire its way into first place. The team completed the ranire with a score four points better than Karon's* but tho latter still held a lead of 1G on the two distances. The Petone team had meanwhile dropped to third place. At the concluding range the firat two men down for Karori, viz., Burns and Halliday, gave their team a further advance, and left little Toom for doubt as to tho final result. The conditions here were very difficult, and some ■ promising individual scores were wrecked. With a grand total of S3i points Karori won comfortably by 46 points from the Suburbs team, which had come through quietly in the late stages from last place and headed Petone by one point.' Tlip latter team fired through, out with five emergencies, and its pm , ' formance was applauded by the other teams. At- the conclusion of the match Pres. Eabe (chairman of the union's executive) expressed the union's thanks to Mr. H. Hawthorne, who had acted as range officfff for the match. Messrs. W. Cowan and J. M'Donald, who. .supervised the marking in the trenches; also earned the competitors' appreciation of their valuable work. The union's, trophy for the highest individual ecore was won by Rifleman J. Burns (Karori). Detailed scores :— Karori Rifle Club. . • ' ' 300 500 GOO. yds. yds. yds. Tl. ' J. Burns 31 31 29 91 G. Fnlliday 29, 30 31 SO N. Willoughby 28 30 27 85 i H. Bulford 31 28 26 85W.
