The chairman congratulated the members of tlio" congress on the vory great success of the mcetine. The slight D essimism which existed in the minds of many at the commencement had seemed to urge tilings forward, and it was now pleasant to feel 'that it had been a very good thing. " > The following resolutions passed at tlie sectional meetings of the congress wore adonted:— ' ~ "That this congress urge .umm tlio Govornmcnt Hie irowwrtancß of ( • systematic tests made of the suitability of sifes for astronomical and geophysical observations, beginning with an investigation of Central Otago." . ' ■ "That with a view of the great scientific value of a knowledge of the variations of tli* electrical state of the atmosphere the Government lie ureed to recognise the desirnbilitv of installing an electrograph at the Christchurch Magnetio Olyervatory." ' ■' ". ■ ' "That the Government be urged to appoint, a palaeontologist as a permanent member of the Geological Survey staff nt the earliest possible onportunity,. such an officer .being essential for the* proper caitving on of the geological survey. i "That'this .meeting strong urge noon the Government the installation; of scie-tno-raph instruments of the most modern character, as the instruments used in New Zealand at present, though givincr very useful information, are not capable of work of the highest character.
