LINSEED FOOD FOR CALVES
From time to time attention is directed to cases of illness, or even death, of calves resulting from the use of linseed cake. In vie* of the widespread popularity of these foods for calf rearing (says a writer in the "Live Stock Journal") it is obvious that such cased of trouble must be' comparatively rare, but they servo to direct attention to the fact that a certain amount of care is necessary in the feeding of linseed or linseed cake to young stock. All that is necessary is that if the linseed is treated with water at all it must be kept .for-a little time at practically boiling temperature. The satest plan 'is actually to boil the linseed with tho water. j,f this cannot be done conveniently, and ."Bearding" is resorted to, it is necessnry that the water should be absolutely boiliug as it is poured on the meal, using at least ten times as much water as meal (1 gallon water to lib. meal), and stirring carefully until quite free from lumps. If this procedure is followed closely the mixture shonld be quite safe to- feed, especially if prepared not long before feeding time.
