MAGISTRATE'S COURT
A SERIOUS CHARGE
Charges alleging a conspiracy to procure .abortion at Wellington and Blackball were preferred against Joseph Hill, Jean Collyns, and Alice Scoble, before Mr. F. IV. Frn/.er, S.M., at thp Magistrate's Court yesterday. Hill and Collyns were further charged with unlawfully attempting to supply certain articles with intent, to procure abortion on a young woman named Gwendoline Thomas.
Chief Detective GBoddam prosecuted, Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for accused Hill, and Mr. P. J. O'Regan appeared for tho accused Collyns. Scoble was not represented by counsel. Willie Donovan, assistant to the Government Analyist, gave evidence as to the analysis he had made of certain pills, and Dr. C. D. Henry, gave evidence as to tho composition of the pills and their effect.
After hearing the evidence, all three accused pleaded not guilty, and were committed to tho Supreme' Court for trial. Bai» was allowed in each case in tho sum of ,£IOO and one surety of .£IOO.
HOTEL THIEF GAOLED. James M'Donald appeared' before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., to answer four charges of theft from a city hotel and an hotel at Palmerston North. At the Palmerston North hotel ho admitted stealing a coat and a pair of trousers, valued at ,£l2, and ho also confessed to tho theft of a pair of boots valued at £2 10s., a pocket camera, valued at =£3, and a silver purse, valued at 10s., from a city hotel.
Detective-Sergeant Cox stated that tho accused stayed at the Rutland Hotel, Wellington, on January 11, and left tho next day with the articles mentioned in the information, for Palmerston North, where ho registered at an hotel, and during the night stole a suit of clothes. Tho accused had previously been convicted of theft from an hotel at Obaki, and was for that offence sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment, His Worship sentenced accused to one month's imprisonment on each of tho first three charges, and on the charge of theft of the silver purse imposed a fine of £2, in default seven days in gaol— sentences to be concurrent.OTHER POLICE CASES. On a charge of stealing a razor valued at los., Die property of Victor Bannister, George Edward Kinnaird was remanded to appear on February 12. Bail was allowed in the sum of <£50 and one surety of .£SO. Alfred Moule and Nicholas Cairnagh, convicted on a charge of threatening behaviour, were each fined =C 2, in default three days' imprisonment. William Joseph Chalk, for obstructing the police on the arrest of the two offenders, waa fined £3, in default seven days' imprisonment. Michael Francis Carrick, who whilst drunk resisted tho arresting policeman, Constable G. Bowling, and also made use of objectionable language was fined «C 3, in default 21 days imprisonment on the major charges, and for drunkenness was formally convicted, and discharged. On a charge of committing a grossly indecent act on Lambton Quay on Monday Henry Fliirht was fiiipd £5, in default one month's imprisonment. For drunkenness he' was formally convicted and discharged. A fine of .£2 was imposed on John Prysc, who confessed to a breach of his prohibition order. For drunkenness ho was fined 10s.
For drunkenness Mary M'Mauus was fined 10s.. nn<l Felix Grant was fined 20s. Two first offenders were formally convicted and discharged, nnother was fined 10s., and a fourth was fined ss,
The monthly sitting of the Lower Hutt Magistrate's Court was held yesterday, before Mr. F. V. Eraser, S.M., and Mr. .1. Wilkin, .LP. For allowing stock to wander, G. Bird was fined 10s. and 7s. oosts; Thomas Twomev, 15s. and 7s. costs; H. C. Ell, 20s. anil 7s, costs; S- Hunter, ss. and 7s. costs. '
Norman Clout, charged with driving a motor-car without a number in front, was fined Is and costs.
