NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS

ANNUAL MEETING. By TeleETP.ph—Press Association, Christchurch, February 5. The annual meeting of the council of the New Zealand branch of the British Bed Cross Society and the Order of St. John was held to-day, the GovernorGeneral presiding. His Excellency welcomed the delegates, and announced that a handsome sum had been received for the New Zealand Red Cross from the Cuban Republic. It was. decided that the sum should be handed to the central committee for Red Cross purposes in New Zealand.

His Excellency informed the council that the hospital ship Marama had been taken over by the Imperial Government, and that it was proposed to hand over the Red Cross supplies on board to the Imperial authorities. This proposal was. i.pproved by tho council.

Miss M'Lean announced that the sunrl required for tlie- Dunedin Convalescent Home was ,£SOO-. Payment of this amount was approved. Regarding the "Our Day" contribution to the British Red Cross funds, it was decided to remit to the British Red Cross Society such additional amount as shall be necessary to make up the total of the "Our Day" contribution from New Zealand to .£125,000.

His Excellency stated that,'although clothing, etc., was not required in England, foodstuffs were still most welcome to all parts. The following resolutions were,carried:

"That the officer in charge of the military hospitals in the Dominion be advised that the New Zealand branch of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John is prepared to supply the hospitals with all Red Cross requirements, and that they be requested to communicate with the executive of the district in which 'such hospitals are situated, 5 '

"That a visiting committee be 6et up in each centre to visit all military hospitals in its district and ascertain their requirements." ,

"That all centres be advised to carry on their Red Cross work to such an extent as is necessary to supply the New Zealand local military hospitals and returned siok and wounded, and that no further appeal for funds for Red Cross purposes be made until the Central Committee decides otherwise."

•"That all funds raised for Red Cross purposes in any centre shall be left under the control of such centre."

"That all matters of expenditure of a Dominion character should be firstly considered by the New Zealand Executive and' submitted to tho centres for approval."

"That this, council reaffirms its readiness to co-operate with the military authorities to the fullest extent in all meters pertaining to the wants of tlie sick and wounded soldiers."

"That in the event of the Government taking action in the way of sccuiring control of the Red Cross funds., the Red Cross organisation throughout the Dominion bo requested to take measures to resist to the uttermost the control of the funds passing from them."

"Thatvon the vacoiuniendation of tho executive of any centre, certificates, be issued to schools which have doiie Red Cross work in connection with the war."

Lieutenant-Colonel W. 11. Sefton Moorhouse was reappointed officer in charge at headquarters for the ensuing year.

The resignation of Mr. Shirtcliffe as a member of the permanent executive was received, and Mrs. Luke and Mr. T. Young were appointed members of the permanent executive for the ensuing year. >
