A daily motor service is about to be instituted between Masterton and Tinui.
One or two large land transactions have been reported in Masterton during the last few days.. The following officers were elected at the annual :meeting of tho Masterton branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union on Tuesday:—President, Mrs. L. Devonport (re-elected); vicepresidents, Mesdames White, Ross, and R-utter; record-secretary, Mrs. MurrayJackson ; treasurer, Mrs. R. Sutherland.
- A ririk from' the Featherstori Bowling Club on Tuesday unsuccessfully attempted to wrest the championship medals from the Park Club.
Miss A. G." Wilson, of Christchurch. has been appointed senior assistant at St. Matthew's School in Masterton. •
Miss M. Wingate has. been appointed delegate of the Masterton W.C.T.U. to the annual conference at Napier. . Shearing operations are not yet completed in the.Masterton and Wairarapa districts.
Notwithstanding the high prices of labour and material building operations in Masterton have been more active during the last two or three years than at any recent period in the history of the town. There is still, however,' an unsatisfied demand for houses.
Second-Lieutenant J. H. M'Kenzie, of Masterton, who returned by the Oxfordshire, served at Gallipoli, and was wounded at Messines and Bapaiime. He received, the Meritorious Survice .Medal after Passchendaele, and subsequently, was given a commission....
A serious accident befel Willie Hart, the young son of Mr. Walter Hart, of on Monday morning. He was driving in some draught horses, when one of them lashed.out and caught him in the face. He was at once taken to Nurse Strang's private hospital, where he is. doing'as well as can be expected. Among the soldiers who returned by the express at Pahiatua on Monday were •xToopers ,T. Lankey, J. Selby, and G. Taylor, and Privates J. Scanlon and Jansen. As no previous notification was received of their arrival, no official welcome was accorded them. Tho "boys," however, soon found themselves among their many friends in Pa-l;iatua and the district who were glad to see them back again after their experiences at the front.
' The new infant school at Lansdowne is to be erectod on the allotment fronting tho hospital road.
An accident occurred in the Ifakuri Gorge a few days ago, but fortunately the consequences were not serious. Jlr. Russell, driving: in. his gig from his place at Conoor, met a wagoner in tho Gorge, and waited for a short time talking to the wagoner. Without any warning his horse started edging to one sido and. gradually went over the edge, und the horse; gig, and occupants plunged down about 30ft. . Luckily there was a good deal of'scrub growing on the side, 'which evidently? steadied their downward plunge, otherwise there must havo Been a seriouS accident. The horse was killed, but the occupants, and also the gtg. got off scathless—a marvellous escape. '
