SURRENDER OF KUT
CRITICISMS REPLIED TO BY GENERAL TOWNSHEND T3y Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, February 1. General Townshend, in a speech at Norwich, bitterly denied the criticism of the surrender of Kut in a newly-publish-ed book by Mr. Edmund Candler, official correspondent with the relief force in •Mesopotamia. General Townshend said that there were many grave reasons, well known to the garrison, but unknown to Mr. Candler, why he asked for speedy relief. He sent a meseage to the Com-mander-in-Chief that he would not re main in Kut unless he was guaranteed relief within a month. The Commander-in-Chief gave the guarantee, but failed to carry it out. By remaining at Kut he saved Mesopotamia. He was only able to hpldout as long as he did by compelling the Arabs to reveal where they had buried gkin, under houses and elsewhere.—Au6.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
