WEEK-END RAILWAY FARES

BEINSTATEMENT OF SUNDAY TRAINS. ) ■ ■ ■ ■ A requisition signed by 261 bona-fide residents of Paekakariki district, that the week-end railway fare in force between Wellington and Paekakam prior to the war should be reinstated, was forwarded to the Minister of Railways last month by Mr. W. H. Field, M.P. In a covering lotter Mr. Field said:('As the requisition points out, the cancellation of this privilege has inflicted much increased cost on the people, at Paekakariki, ns well as on Wellington residents, and resulted in serious curtailment of the railway revenue. The increase in the fare of 2s. 3d. to. ss. Sd. b-econd-class, with corresponding increase for first-class, has entailed an addition of 150 per cent, on the pre-war fares. Now that the war is over, I trust that the Department will see its way to return to pre-war conditions in this espect. i need hardly point out to you how eeriouslv this matter and the cancellation.of the 'Sunday trains has been affecting the pockets of residents along the Manawatu line and persons desirous of visiting that district. With respect to the Sunday trains, I understand from you that the railwaynieu themselves were averse to Sunday work, but I am informed by railwayinen that they are willing to undeiake Sunday labour .60 long as they mo adequately paid therefor. You will, I think agree* that tho Sunday tram to and from Otaki was a highly profitable one, and a great deal to encourage Sty people to leave tho conges ed Imn arm and make their abode in lie mow wholesome country air. lhe icceM epidemic has brought hpino toi us tUo v tal necessity of encouraging people to siin at fl a.m." Worries, in reply, on Mondays- _^__-
