TARAWEEA'S CREW SIGNS OF? , AT LYTTELTON. By Tclegrapli.-Preßß Association. Christchurch, February 3. The crew of the Union Company's cargo stoamer Tarawera signed off the vessel at Lyttelton to-day, their articles having expired. The crew stated that they would not rejoin the vessel, however, until the following clause was added to Section 6 of the Shipping and Seamen Act, 1911:—"Notwithstanding anything to the contrary, it is hereby 'agreed that members of the New Zealand Seamen's Union signing these articles and being invalided oil shore at any place in New Zealand with illness, other .than venereal disease, contracted in the service of the ship at any place after leaving tho vessel, shall be paid by the owners the full rate of the monthly wage for three months or to the date of recovery as certified by the medical attendant, whichsoever first occurs; and if invalided ashore at a place other than the place where the articles were' signed, shall, in addition to the foregoing, be granted a free passage back to the place where the were signed within one week of recover/ or of the expiration of the three months as the case may be; and that the articles of agreement shall be read and construed accordingly." , ■ . . ■ It is understood that the Union Company is not likely to agree to the insertion of this new clause, and in the meantime the Tarawera is held, up pending further developments.
