HIDE AND TALLOW SALES
The fortnightly sales of hides and tallow were held yesterday by the various brokers. HeEßrs. Dalgety and Co. report that they offered a good, catalogue to a small attendance of buyers. Competition for heavy lines suitablo for tanners' requirements was keen at an advance of a halfpenny per lb. Calfskins maintained previous high rates. Tallow was in poor demand, soapmakers refusing to operate except at greatly reduced rates. Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co. report that they offered a very attractive catalogue of 1275 hides, 220 calfskins, and yearlings, and a quantify of tallow. The, offering' consisted mainly of superior hides in good 'Condition. Prices for ox hides were from Bd. to lid. per lb. higher, and cows id. to 3d. higher than last' sale. Calfskins were on a par with last sale. Bidding was very brisk, and the whole catalogue was cleared. There was practically, no demand for tallow, and very few lines were disposed of. Messrs. Levin and Co. report, that they offered a large catalogue of hides and tallow. There was goou competition, oome .lines of cow and heavy ox showed a slight advance. Inferior lines were easier, and other descriptions sold'on a par with last sale rates. There is practically no demand from London or America for tallow, and buyers at this end do know quite where prices are. Yesterday s ottering was, tttereforc, neglected, practically all lots being passed in. Messrs. Abraham and Williams; Ltd., state that they offered a large catalogue to a full bench of buyers/ wno. competed keenly for everything offered with the exception of tallow, which was decidedly neglected. Heavy ox hides showed a rise on last sale's rates to the extent ofjd . per .lb., whilst cow hides were much firmer at an advance of Jd. per lb. The New Zealand Farmers Co-op. Distributing Co., Ltd., report a very, spirited demand. Prices ruled firm for all deaaripuons; and catalogues were well cleared. The tallow market was very much nSd and a number of lines were passed in' at pries considerably lower than those ruline & fortnight ago.
