SURPLUS WOOL FOR THE NAVY
SAILORS' DEPENDANTS' SCHEME. Mr. Edward Newman, M.P., has received an interesting letter from LientennatColonel Norman FitzUerbert, C.M.G., an nld resident and farmer of Rangilikei, and now head of the New Zealand Records Office in London, in which he remarks:—"Thank you for forwarding par ; ticulars of your sailors' dependants' scheme. I congratulate you most sincerely for having thought of such a very praiseworthy and patriotic idea. In my opinion, nothing has been as fine in this war as the heroic conduct of our seamen, most particularly the men of the merchant service, who, undaunted by previous suffering, returned to risk death and' disaster over and over again. I always think of the ship's boy, who, after being torpedoed, considered himself most fortunate and well treated by his firm because they had given him a borth at once on another outgoing ship. Such is the fibre of which our heroic sailormen are made. Unfortunately for me, I have no surplus wool to give von, but I shall be only too pleased to subscribe to your fund, and I have instructed Marshall and Hutton to eend you a cheque for ,£IOO. If possible I should like, this earmarked for the benefit of the merchant service, but if not possible, make use of it for the general fund." It is gratifying to find material support of this scheme for the benefit of the dependants of sailors of both eervices, coming in from old settlers now resident in othor lands, as well, as from tho present voolgrowers of the Dominion. •
