The Hon. R. K. Simpson has been appointed a member of the Licensing Committee for the district of Rangitikei. \ Press Association message from Sydney states that Mr. Laurence Armstrong, ■ a 'native of Christehurch, has been appointed a' District Court Judge. Mr. J, G. L. .Hewitt, S.M., his been appointed chairman of the North and South 'Island Bailway Boards of Appeal. A Press Association cable message from London states that Sir Joseph Cook, Federal Minister for the Navy, has returned to Paris. Mr. P. Godber, deputy superintendent of the Petone Fire Brigade, has resigned his position on. account of his removal from Petone. Mr. Godber has Seen associated with the brigade for many years, and at a meeting of the Petoue Fire Board members expressed their appreciation of the valuable service rendered by Mr. Godber, and regret that his departure from Petone necessitated lu's resigning his position. Captain C. M'Donakl, Marine Superintendent for the Union Steam Ship Com-, naiiy, lias arrived at, Wellington from Dunediii. The labours of two past presidents of the New Zealand Nurserymen's Association, Messrs. T. Wnugh, of Wellington, and T. Horton, of came in for commendation at yesterday's conference of the association. It was decided to present each of them with illuminated addresses, and a committee was sot up to make the necessary arrangements. Private William Mostyn, son of Mr. William Mostyn, of Wallace Street, and brother of Mr. H. E. Mostyn, Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories, yesterday came to Wellington by the ferry boat from Lyttelton. Private Mostyn went, away with the Fifth Reinforcements, and has "a. record of four years' service. He was wounded at Flers and at Messines, and returned to New Zealand the other day by the transport Briton. Before his enlistment Private Mostyii w.is an employee of the Wellington City Corporation. . The new editor of the "Sydney Morning Herald"—Mr. T. W. Heney having resigned after 30 years' service—is Mr. Charles Brunsdon Fletcher, who passed his boyhood days in Auckland and at the Thames.' He is a son of the late Mr. Charles Fletcher, a well-known business man at the Thames in the early days, who afterwards settled In New South AVales. Mr. C. B. Fletcher, who was educated at Wesley College, AuckUnd, and also at a school at the Thames, of which his uncle (Mr. John Fletcher) was Principal, joined the editorial staff of the "Brisbane- Courier" in 1893, and was editor of that paper from 1898 to 1303. During the past fifteen years ho has been associate editor of the "Sydney Morning Herald." Mr. E. (!. .Tellicoe, who formerly practised law in Wellington, was a visitor to Auckland this week.' He and Mrs. Jellicoe have teen on a lour of the Far iiufi, and are now on their way back to Ki.gland. via Canada. Mr. John Bradley, Otaki, who has been an inmate of the Bowen Street Private Hospital for eome time past, underwent an operation two weeks ago and is now making excellent progress towards recovery. , . Forsylh, of the Royal Fieltl Artillery, and a-son of Mr. l>. Forsyth, of the City Engineer's Department at Auckland, has been promoted to the rank of major. Major Forsyth has lwen in command of the calibration section of the Fourth Atony since its inception. Among those returning by the Wiltshire, due at Wellington to-day, is Captain W. J. Hardham, V.C. Captain Hardham left with the Main Body, and s:iw service in Egypt and Gallipoli, where ho was severely wounded. Ho returned invalided to New Zealand, and later, having recovered, he again volunteered for active sorvice, and has since been serving with his regiment, the Wellington Mounted Rides, in Palestine. There recently died at Cambridge a man who arrived in Auckland just seven years after the colony wns founded at tho Bay of Islands by Governor Hobson, seventy-nine years ago. Mr. George Lloyd had attained the age of 81 years. He landed in Auckland when a boy aged nine, with his parents, in tho year 1847, from the ship Sir Robert Sale. Mr. Lloyd eaw service during tho Maori War with the Howick Cavalry. In 1863 he drove /with his wife and five children; from Tninnki to Orakau, a journey which at that tinio occupied a week. He farmed there for some years, and was afterwards a resident at Ngaroto for fifteen years. From that place he removed to Cambridge twenty years ago, where, he resided until his death. Mr. Lloyd is sur- i vived by his wife, three eons, six daughters, 23 grandchildren, and two grentgraiidchildren.—Auckland "Star."
