IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS. At tlio monthly meeting of tho Wellington Education Hoard held yesterday the -following report of the e xecutivo (dealing with. city anil suburban school properties) was adopted:-- ; "(a) Berhamporo and Jlntnilai. —That the secretary obtain, if possible, quotation of the minimum price, and. refer to tho director with a view to obtaining a grant for the whole amount required. "(b) Muritni.—That the preliminary steps be taken, and authority asked, for acquirement of the area recommended by thn School Committee. "(c) Terrace.—That tho former lessee having acquired a renewal of lease of Lot .11,. the. board consider the alternative of.(a) obtaining from the lessee a portion of the area of Lot It, or (b) renewing the lease of Lot Iβ ■ "ill.) Newtown.—The executive having visted the Newtown School and conferred with theiommiHeo in relation to tha acquirement of properties adjoining tho I.Newtown'School,-finds that ft considerable portion of the price represents ' building, improvements'; and,'after careful consideration, it recommends that the committee be informed that while the board is very anxious to procure liullicient playing area for our large schools it does-not feel justified, taking into, consideration, relative urgency of need, in asking tho Government to provide nearly. ..£12,000 for property, a considerable part of 9 the value of .which, owing. to the agp of ihe buildings, must be written off. within a few years." The, only clause discussed was. tho lust one. The chairman stated that whilst they wished to do all in their power to provide adequate playing grounds it was useless asking the Govornment to provide tho sum of ,£12,000 aI: tho present juncture for the proposal. ■ -. ■ j Mr. George. London said that in the 'replacing of old with neiv schools they should consider ihe possibility of using the basements of the schols as shelter sheds instead of haying to encroach on the playgrounds for space for such sheds. Ho know of several instances where tho basements of schools now in use could bo so.used,' thus freeing tho grounds of the encumbrances of shelter sheds. Mr. J. r. Shand said thnt one of the troubles with tho Newtown School was that , it was built oh it level lower than the main road it faced. It was certainly in n'very thickly populated part of the city, and finite near to the Wellington South School. •Hβ was wondering whether thero was not another suitable site for a school nearer the city, for with, its valuable frontage . they would have no difficulty in selling the present site. At all events there might bo sonio alternative scheme which might afford somo relief. ■ The report was adopted. Tho Town Hall, public libraries, and lighting offices will be closed to-morrow for the corporation staff annual picnic. In consequence of tho' iniluenza epidemic, the commercial travellers, 'who wore organising the Mercantile Marino Dependants' Fund, were compelled to postpone same. At an enthusiastic meeting of members, held last evening, it was decided to hold a' surprise packet feature on March 13 ,14, 15. Considerable progress has already been made, and this effort, it is stated, promises to eclipse all previous offorts ot tho 'travellers. It was decided to reserve a portion of the funds for distribution in New Zealand, whilst a. trustee will be appointed da behalf of tho travellers to act iii conjunction with thq High Commissioner in London, to ensure a proper administration of tho fund. ■ SYMPTOMS OF KIDNEY TROUBLE.
