Captain Pitt, the well-known Maori officer,.made a statement in reply to the Teconf- deputation to the Mayor of Auckland regarding tho disembarkation of tho Maori Pioneer Battalion at Gisborne Captain Pitt said half tho number of returning men came from the Bast Const. When the Maori Battalion was in camp at Auckland there wore only 64 out of over 500 from the Ngapuhis, v/hoso claims wore urged by Auckland. Further, big expense would be saved as the Maoris were concentrating at Gisborne for a big hiii, and the soldiers Trould receive a truly united welcome.
