The Tsar was living in Ekaterinburg in Hie house of an engineer named Ignntieff. It was rumoured that the Czecho-Slovaks were coming to set the Romanoffs free, whereupon the Red Guards' Head Council decided to execute the Tsar and his family. The men did not wait for written authority. They manifested barbarous joy, stamping and cheering, and rushed to the engineer's house. The Tsar and Tsarina had gone to bed,, but' hearing the noise they hastily put on their clothes. The Grand Duchesses came in, and the Tsar helped his 6on into his uniform. Then the family kneft in .prayer. The boy was overcome with emotion, and the Tear was forced to interrupt his prayer to go to his son's assistance. The Tsarina was on her knees when the door was burst open, and the leader, with a fiendish grin, said: "I see you have already prepared yourself." Tlie Tsar replied: "I am ready." The leader retorted: "We are also going to wipe out your wife and family," and turning to the men .he said: "Out with them, and no pardon." The Red Guards jostled the royal exiles through the door, the Tsar bearing his fainting son. His wife followed, praying softly; then the Grand Duehewes and the Baroness Buxherden, all in tears. Thus they went to the cellar of a neighbouring house. On the way they met a batch of friends going to execution, including Dr. Bogkin and Prince Dolguruky. The Tsar greeted them, saying, "And you also. The Red Guards, afraid that the bullets would rebound in such a confined space, shot the victims point blank with -revolvers.
