. « . EASTER CARNIVAL AT MASTERTON. , Tlie Jfasterton Chess Club is promotinu.a carnival, to be/held at Alasterton diiriiift the Easter holidays. It is expected that players from Auckland, Wnnganui, Niipier, Wairarnpa, Wellington, Wellington South, iVgaio, and Dunetlin will take part. Air. A. Clenias, lion, secretary of the. Mastertou Club, addressed a largely-attended joint meeting of the four Wellington clubs at the Y.JI.C.A. Dooms on Saturday evening, when various detail? were discussed at length. It is proposed to hold as the major event a teams tournament, for which each club is asked to nominate the three strongest players that it can muster for the occasion. The remaining players ore to l)e catered for in a supplementary contest. Play will commence on the evening of Good Friday, and finish at midday, on Easter Alonday, -As showing that the/social.side is not being neglected, it may he mentioned tliat a ladies' committee is providing supper and after' noon tea. It. is proposed to provide a small trophy for. the teams tourney, and to n'ltew it to become the property of the club taking first place at the carnival. If.a successful gathering results nn ani>r w -u contest will probably be inaugurated, and a more pretentious trophy provided. As regards the supplementary contest, it. was at first proposed that this shoulfl take the form of a minor teams tourney. Tf, however, the assembled players would be better catered for by substituting a handicap tourney—say, on the "sudden-death" or "twolife" system—the supplementary contest would be arranged accordingly. 'The four local -lion.'secretn'ries,• E. S; Taylor, S. Fitidknbr. A. Clark, nnd It. Prince*, and Messrs. G. S. Jl'Nair, and F.'Kelling'were appointed as a committee to work locally for the success of the carnival— soma of the final details of which, will have,'to stand over until the number of entries is known. The.present indications suggest that, the Jlasterton Glub will score a decided siicr-H?. At'the-conclusion of the meeting, which was presided over by Mr. AV.
