SUMMER RACES

CONCLUDING DAY

FINE WEATHER AND GOOD RACING

MELEE WINS THE BIG HANDICAP

GLOAMING'S KELBURN PLATE'

The Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting was concluded, on Saturday. Xha weather was perfect, and a great crowd attended. Again the railway arrangements were good, and most of the people' went to Trentham by liain. The totalieutor registered .£63,947 for the fluy, which is nearly .£7OOO greater tha'i the sum put through on the second day oi the lasl summer meeting. For J e Greeting the sum of .itl'l.OiK Was registered, which amount is .£16,973- above the total for the last sumer meeting. The racing was interesting throughout. R. S. Bagby was the most surifssful horseman on the day. Ho rode thre.l winners—Melee, Silver' Link an', Hβbebah. H. Gray had ■ two wins—Red Signal and Affectation. B. Deeley, C. Mmerson, and 51. M'Donald each rode one winner For the meeting the winning ridee went as follow: —B. Deeley, 4 and a dead heat; It. S. Bagby, 3; C. liimerson, 2; H. Gray, 2j J. Smith, 1; L. Morris, lj R. Jiackie, 1; M. M'Donald, 1; R. Reed, a dead heat.

All started in the Mungaroa Welter Handicap, the public preferring Red Signal and Retard in that order. They were well on the mark, for the former, who had Gray in the saddle, took charge at the barrier, and won comfortably from Retard, with Risingham and Momac next; Gray allowed his mount to run along, and the tactics suited her, for at no stage of the race did the others get within a length of her. Retard was not fortunate hi running, and 'when trying for an opening in the straight he had to be checked, which cost him some ground. Winter Cherry, who pulled up sore after racing on Wednesday, was scratched for the January Welter Handicap, for which Hendra was well in the market; but he failed badly, and again finished in fourth place after a fast-run race. Comment slipped the field at the barrier rise, and she led Revocation, Bagdad, and Glorify down the back. At the haif-mile Hyttus moved up, but Comment was first into the. straight, and holding .the others safely, she ran home a winner by two lengths from Hyttus. Bagdad was a neck away,- and then came Hendra, Glorify, and Galore in a line. Glorify did not get a good passage, otherwise his backers would have got some return for their money. Comment failed at Toxton on Wednesday. Probably the sandy track there does not suit the I'rovoeation mare.

The Fluency bubble burst badly in the Fihsherberfc Handicap, in which Affectation gave her eighteen pounds and a beating. The pair were the only ones backed, and the favourite did not begin too well, but got to the front after going three furlongs, and looked to.be winning easily till Gray brought the top-weight along, and easily accounted for I the Demosthenes filly. Motuihi was third and' Hose Wreath next. Fluency was very "new".to the business, and is sure to see a better day. There is no doubt about her pace, and she only wants a few races to lose her greenness. She will figuro in some of the weight-for-nso mors Inter in the season, and will have a big pull in the weights.

All started in the big handicap. The Eiddiford bracket (Menelaus and Mascot), Eewi Poto. and Lagogeur being backed in that order. In the birdcage nothing looked better than the last-named pair, who were improved by the racing, while the others all bore a jaded appearance, liewi Poto was again last away, and the bracket led out of the straight and down the back. .At the five furlongs the field bunched up, and a pretty race • ensued. Mascot led Ladogeur at the half-mile, but the latter then took charge, while at the turn into tho straight Melee, Heathercote, aJid Rewi Poto joined in. A furlong from home Ladogeur gave way. Melee and Eewi Pofo finished on well, and the Yaldhurst representative staying on well beat E«wi Poto by a neck. Heathercote was a length awny, and t!i->n came Battle Song and Menelaus, -while Mascot was the last to finish. Eewi Poto was a bit unlucky, as he had to leave the rails and go round five horses at the turn into flie straight. A win for Melee was not overdue, as out of eight starts this season he has'been favourite six times, but has regularly failed. As he gave a good return his owner probably not even on him for the season's outlay. . . Gloaming saw a very short price in the Kelburn Plate,' and he duly lnnded the odds laid on him. Surveyorand Torfreda had him doing his best for two furlongs, but after that ho came away and won nicely from Surveyor, with Crenides two lengths off, and Croesus, Torfreda, and Astinome in that order. The winner has only to keep right and several weight- c for-ago'events are at his mercy during the next month. Though he has done a lot of racing this season, Mason has tho bay gelding looking remarkably well. Surveyor has been unlucky in striking liira, while Kilmoon in the same stable has also chased the flier home on several occasions. Gloaming received a good cheer when he came back to the birdcage. , Afterglow had a large following in the Douro'Cup, but Bobur and Hurry Up also had" plenty of supporters. A good start was effected, Active and Paddington Green leading a. bunched field, Afterglow and Signorella being in the rear. Active was still in charge when they entered the straight, but Cooing, Palm Oil, and Afterglow soon joined him. Over the last furlong a great iimsh took place. Palm Oil n 'ota lucky opening on the fence and won all out from Active, with Cooing a neck away. The.favourite was fourth, and then came Siinorella. and Paddington Green. Hurry Up failed badly, and is clearly not as good as was thought. Palm Oil has. now won four times on end, and is proving a good .purchase for hie owner. Cooing ran her best race this season, and may yet show some form. Afterglow was a trifle unlucky, and entering the straight she had to go round the field, whereas the winner, Palm Oil, got an opening on the rails a furlong from home. . Acre, Koesian, and flo-Peep all carried over four figures on the machine for the Metropolitan Handicap, and the firstnamed was unlucky to be be-aten, for he was slow to find hts feet, and then had to come round his field on the bend. Silver Link was in efiarge with lulboyno when they came into the straight, but then Acre appeared on the outside, and Kipling got, through on the fence. Silver Link easily.held her own, and won by a couple of lengths from lunlmg, while the judge placed Damien third, though it looked as if-Acre occupied that position. Kilboyno was the next to finish. The winn.,l , was all the better for her race on "Wednesday. For the concluding event Moorabbe and • Hymarty were each supported for over Jl'2ooo, while Rebekah carried half this amount. Tho last-named was greatly improved 'by her first' day's run, and iron from the top-weight, while an outsider in Astinome, who was making her second appearance on tho day, • filled third place.
