"BILLIE" CARLETON'S DEATH
CONCLUSION OF THE INQUEST. By Telegraph—Prees Association— Copyright (Kec. January '16, 5.5 p.m.) London, January 23. At the further hearing of the case arising from the death of the actress "Billie' Carletoii, Doveulle admitted that lie took «EiOO from the prosecutor in a blackmail case in May, 1917, and went to America, but denied that the money was given as an! inducement to him to leave the country. Deveulle added that the prisoners were nephews of <i titled lady with whom Deveulle was staying. He was well acquainted with Anna Kobinso.n, and said that everyone in the West End knew that she was addicted to drugs when she married Lord Rossley. Deveullo declared that Carleton was a drug-taker years before he met her. Carleton once took refuge in his llat because an American officer, whose proposal of marriage Carlctone rejected persisted in pursuing her, and tried to smash.the door of her flat. Aβ a result the officer was immediately sent back to America. , . Deveulle strenuously denied supplying Carleton with cocaine. \ Tho Coroner, summing up, said he was glad that the disgusting case had ended, but it was necessary Jo decide how Carleton had got the drugs. The Defence or the Realm Act made it supply cocaine. Anyone so doing recklessly was guilty of manslaughter under the common law. ■ The jury's verdict was that death was due to an accidental overdose of cocaine, and that Deveulle supplied the cocaine.
