PLUNKET SHIELD

. WON BY CANTERBURY CHALLENGERS BAT WELL / THE WELLINGTON ATTACK WEAK,

The ma,tch for the 'Phinket Shield *was concluded. at the Basin Reserve yesterday, "'and resulted in a win for Canterbury by seven wickets. The weather was tine and the wicket was good. When play ceased the previous day Canterbury had made. 129 for two wickets in their second innings, which left them 170 runs to obtain in order to win, Wellington's grand total being 486. N. L. Jones and W. Patrick, the two not. out men, had made 67. and-21 respectively, and they both continued their innings yesterday morning. Before Jones was bowled by Hiddleston he had increased his score to 88. After he left the wickets Thomas joined Patrick, and it remained for these two to pilot' their side to victory. This they succeeded in doing by consistently good batting, Patrick making 87 not out,' aiid Thomas 72 not out. Wellington's bowling was not very strong, and with the exception of that of Hiddleston and Marris, ; the fielding was mediocre. ■. When play was resumed, Patrick took strike to the bowling of Marris. in Marris's third over. Jones sent the fourth ball to the boundary with a nice stroke to the off, and a few singles coming after this, . 340 was Ehown on the board within ten min-. utes of the commencement of play. Notching a four off Marris, Patrick brought his score,up to 30, and immediately afterwards. Jones annexed a couple of singles. Patrick; had two. narrow escapes when Marris resumed bowling—once from being bowled and once from being-stumped. M'Girr was subsequently handed the ball, and Patrick cut. him for two singles in quick succession. , Jones was. giving a good batting display,, and sent the leather to all parts, of the field,. running _ lus score up to over >80 in quick time. :Within half to hour of ihe start 160 showed on the telegraph.'. Jones skied one off Hiddleston, but it fell too' short for Lambert to get under it. , A. few minutes later, however, Jones succumbed to Hiddleston, who scattered'the bails.; 172—3—88. -Thomas : followed Jones,: and obtained a four and a two off M'Girr, Just before this an admirable opportunity of running out Patriok presented itself, but. it was lost owing to M'Girr missing a.returnfrom one of the fieldsmen. After play had been in progress for 63 minutes the Canterbury score 200, Pat. rick having obtained 51. This left the visitors a margin of 9S? runs to. obtain in order to recover the shield. Patrick sent a high one to the boundary off Hiddleston, which Baker took,, but. failed to hold. Thomas then hit Marris over the rails for six, making a beautiful stroke, which was loudly applauded.' Some very good fielding by Hiddleston also evoked enthusiasm. Canterbury's total had reached 241 after one hour and a half's play, Patrick baying scored 59 and Thomas 49. Both these players were batting freely and confidently, and subsequently they piled on fours and twos rapidly. By 1 p.m. it was evident that Wellington were defeated as there were less than 20 runs wanting for Canterbury_to win. At.ten minutes past 1 290 appeared on the board, and five minutes' later Canterbury had equalled Wellington's grand total of 486: Patrick then made the winning hit by snatching a single. Immediately afterwards Thomas brought the visitors' score up to 303 by obtaining a boundary, and' the game . closed, : .Canterbury having won the shield by seven wickets.' ; Patrick and Thomas were loudly cheered, and each was carried off tlie field shoulder high. At the conclusion of the match the 1 Hon. G. W. Russelll handed over the shield to W. Patrick, captain of the Canterbury team, and congratulated - the victors upoii their, success. :, He also complimented Patrick, Jones, and Thomas upon the fine scores they had made in the'innings. _ ' On behalf of the visitors, Patrick and Mr. Simpson (manager) thanked the Wellington team for the kindly way they had been treated, and in re-, ply, C.
