TROTTING CLUB'S MEETING DEAN DILLON WINS GOLD. OUP. The annual meeting of tho Wellington Trotting Olub was held at Petone yesterday in beautiful weatlier. The track was 111 good order, and there was a largo attendance. The people of the Valley patronised the meeting heavily, and good crowds, went out from tho city by train | and motor. Tho totalisator; investments | showed an increase, the figures being—this year £20,086; last year £20,151. The raping was good on the whole, and tho chief event, the Gold. Cup, provided nil interesting contest. Hickory- Wood came into the straight well in the lead, and is irood- run- by.- Partner failed to catch him. He won by lour .lengths, with Tit Bits about, the. . same distance third. Moondrift was fourth, and Eejoicc f ln the Borough Handicap, TJriderscrub, a hot favourite, ran to the front, when the field was released, but .fnmo Black joined him at the .-three-furlong post. It was soon clear, however, that - *£™uritc was holding the mare safe, Btand tho first, time Underscrub led. with Annio Black next, and then came. Plain ■Rose, War Lord, and Bobalinlc (who had broken badly' shortly after the stint). Going out of the straight again, Plain fiose moved up to the leaders, but tried ,to get through' on the rails and was sent right bank. Underscrub never lost the :lead and went ou_to win .by a dozen •lengths .from, Annie .Black, who .finished just in' front, of - Plain Rose; • Blaokjct was tho enly scratching ixom tho Gold Cup, % for which a field of nine paraded. Gladiola; was installed a .strongfavourite.- and Quadroon and : Bean -Dillon •were well supported. A {rood start was, effected. Dean Dillon began very badly, and Gladiola went away with a handy lead. With .only twtf furlongs gone Dean Dillon- went -to tho front, and- he. led. Gladiola into the- straight. • Passing the stand tho order was' Dean : Dillon, Bundong, Quadroon, Gladiola; This order was unchanged, at the .back, where.. Dean Dillon was-going .beautifully in the .lead: Mahinga' and "Whispering Willie-were going badly, and Gladiola wag beginning to lose ground. •Still trotting - well, Dean Dillon led tho field 'past, the stand the second time, and waß still in the van wheu the straight-was reached again. -lrvar cut down' Biindonsr, who had been lying second; but nothing could get to Dean 1 Billon, who won by a lengths. Bundong \vo.B -a good third,, and Miss Havoo fourth. The favourite, who r,an badly throughout, was well "back. ' . •
■The President's Handicap drew the good Bold of- thirteen. Miss Eye and Wonder-, land were the favourites. When the field had gone a couplo of furlong Wonderland ran to the front and lie reoii • established a commanding lead of who lay second, with Miss Lorna' next and Whispering Willio last. Going, out of tho straight tbe. last time Miss Rye moved' up. but she broke. A little after this Wonderland broke, but he soon got to the leaders again. A' fine' finish' saw Misw Rye, Idol, and Wonderland come up the straight abreast. Miss ' Bye broke in the last bit, and Wonderland, well bandied by A. Fleming, .secured thti verdict by.a neclc' from Idol.
For the Wellington Handicap a, field of nine went out. For his win in tho opening event Hickory Wood' was penalised 6sec. From a.' good start Moondrift went out in front; followed by Tit Bits and' Peace. Passing'the .Btand the. fim timo Moondrift held, fchq lead; with Partner in second position, and Peace and Tit Bits next. With a milo gono Partner went to tho front, and going through the straight tho second timo ]io led Moondrift and Peace, with Jewel Wood moving up in fourth position. Oin the back stretch Jewel Wood wont.-up .into , second position,. and set out alter' Partner. Tho'pair had the raco to themselves now, but Partner turned for liomo with a good lead. Jewel Wood' mado a. good run in the straight, but whon within twenty lengths of the post broke. However, he would not havo caught Partner. Peace was a poor third, and Hickory Wood fourth. War Lock was called off.
_ Eight horses were saddled up for tho Stewards' Handicap, for ' which ' Maud Wilkes was installed favourite.' Maud Willies went out at the start, followed by Linotypo and Molly Chimes, and this was tho order until tho field turned into the straight. Here Linotype took the lead, but fifty yards from the ,Dost Molly Chimes camo on tho rails, and just got up in timo to -win. Maud Wilkes was a close third, and Waiteranui fourth. Tho Pctone Handicap.- a inile and a naif saddle event, was little more than a two'horgo race. Rio Grairdc got a fly and soon established a.-lone lead, which lie held for a. nyle. .Here Rita' Hose, who had been lyinj? second all the way, ran up' to him, and appeared to have a good chance of winning, -when two lengths froni homo, ho brolio: badly. Edwards got his mount froinpc asjain, but she broke once more, and Rio Grande ran homo a winner with about 60 yards to spare. Belgium Lad was a poor third, and Elcy was fourth.
Tho final event, tho Electric Handicap, drew a field of soven, of which Pleasant Mount was favourite, but ho was pulled up after going a little way. It was a good raco, the field keeping together most of the way. Two furlongs from! home Bundong went to the front, and was not headed. Serenity, -who had been pocketed made a good run in tho straight, hut' could not get nearer ■ than six lengths to tho leader. Maud Wilkes was a couple of lengths further back in third place, r.nd Will o' the Wiep was fourth.
