CANTERBURY MARKETS

By Telegraph—Press Association. Christoliurch, January 24. Tho .high, nor'-west winds during the week'liayo done some damage in.shaking tho ripe drops' and generally knocking standing grain about; as well, as overturning stobks. .--Sinco the rain of last week the wcatliei has continued very dry. Tho shortage of coal seems likely to delay thrashing, so that there will be very little dono out of stook. 12arly-cut oats are' now in stack, and as there is little jjrospectof thrashing crops generally, will bo secured as soon as possible., So far as the oat crops are concerned this will mean brightcoloured straw and grain, and as the grain will be better .filled than for several years past, tho quality of both grain and chaff will be much above the average. Very few lots of new oats have yet changed hands. A line ofAlgerians .has been sold at 4s. fid. per bushel at a country station. Some business has been dono. in new season's chaff at £6. per ton for earl.v Febvuary delivery/ and £5 10s. for March delivery, at country stations. Merchants' experience with forward business last year was far from satisfactory. and tliero, is, therefore, a likelihood of much loss of this business being* done on grain and produco this season. . A number of oifers to do forward business in oais. for instance, has been declined. The fact that crops are better than usual and that the North Island is' better provided with oats, hay, and other fodder crops than last year tends to restriel: operations at the present time. . Somo white clnvw is bcinc . offered, but the prices BRkpd n r e considered ton high in view of thn fa<!t that t.here is a Keod supply of last season's seed still in hand, nild can bo bouslit relatively lower than prices asked for new seed. The potato crops are looking wel' aiyl show- the irootl effects of lost week's ruin. ■.Tiidjt'ri" hv the way the enrlv cons are turning o'j.t the main eroi should yield above the averarte, A. few sales of onions have beer made, at- £8 per ton at country stations. -
