EUROPEAN SUGAR CROP
FAILURE PREDICTED. Zurich,' January 21. A Swiss expert predicts' that the beet sugar crop in Europe will be almost a complete failure-in 1919 and 1920, owing to the workmen on the large estates in Germany "and Hungary striking, and leaving the beets to freeze in tho groand. It is unlikely tlint the production in the Ukraine will suffice for local requirements, as peasants who have become landowners have abandoned intensive cultivation.
[Practically the whole of tho sugar consumed in Europe is derived from the sugar beet, and Germany and Aus-tria-Hungary are among the largest producers. Eor many years past attempts have been made to establish the' beet industry in' Great Britain, with indifferent success/J .
