MAGISTRATE'S COURT
THEFT OF A TYPEWRITER, William James Vaughan appeared in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday, bofore Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., charged with boarding the s.s. Columbia with intent to leave New Zealand without a permit from the- Minister of Internal Affairs, contrary to the War Regulations. On the application of Sub-Inspector 'Emerson Yaughan was' remanded to January 31, in order that inquiries may bo made. William Raven - Heennn, who was convicted a week ago on a chargo of having stoki; an Imperial' typewriter, valued at £12. the property of Percy Rogers, licenseo :of To Aro Hotel, came up for sentence. It was explained that tho typewriter had been found in Kolburn Park, and tliftt Hecnan had given the polico every assistance ill recovering the ifiachine. Mr. P. W. Jackson, who apjJeared for Heenan, pointed out that tho man had already been a week in gaol, that lie was a hard 'working man, and that the. theft had been committed while lie was intoxicated. He believed that there was a previous conviction against the man, but it was a very long time ago. The Magistrate said that there was a previous conviction, but it was record-. e"d about thirty-two years ago. He said he did not know how to deal with Heonan; he was certainly justified in disregarding the previous conviction, and thought a fine would meet the case. Heonan was fined .Eo, and ordered to pay cqsts 245., in default one month's imprisonment. For insobriety Joseph Francis Murphy, against whom there was one previous conviction, was fined 10s. For committing breaches of their prohibition orders Robert Collier was fined. £2, in default seven days' .imprisonment, and Nellie Nelson and Esther Collier wore each fined £1, and costs 75.,-.in default seventy-two hours' imprisonment. 1 Albert Cuff, who was found guilty of being' on licensed premises after closing hours, was fined 20s. and costs 75., with the option of. seventy-two hours' imprisonment. William Jennings and John' Reginald Santos were charged with being found in the Princess Hotel after closing hours. Mr. J! W. Jackson-ap-peared for tho accused, who pleaded not guilty. 'Die evidenco against the accused was not very strong, ami tho Magistrate held that although the circumstances, were suspicious the evidenco was not sufficiently ..conclusive, to' enable him to convict the accused. Tho informations were accordingly dismissed. 1 '. | For leaving his motor-car in the street without lights, .J. F. Sinclair was. convicted and ordered to pay 7s. costs.
