The only imnortant arrival at Wellington yesterday was the K.M.S. Moana. from Sau i'ranci6co. She berthed at No. 1 Queen's Wharf at 10.40 . a.m., and-, discharge of 7700 bags of overseas mails, including'a lot of parcel matter, 6tiOO cases of fruit, and a. general cargo of 1430 tons was begun. San Francisco was left ou December 28, and a flue-weathor r.assago was .made; Tni'i-u were, all told, 79 passengors, a bigger number than lias been landed here by e. eieamer in this liin for somo time.. Of this number, 32 are through passengers to Australia, who will tranship to the Moeraki. Tho Moana is to sail on the return trip at 3 p.m. on Monday. MANUKA, FEOM SYDNEY. The Wellington offlco of the Union Company was yesterday advieed by wireless that theSftlanuko, expected to make port at noon to-day. She will berth at Taranaki Street. Wharf to discharge 1000 tons oargo. Her departure on the return trip (to Sydney only) will be made at 5 p.m. on Saturday, if all her cargo, can bo worked before then. MOERAKI SAILS TO-MOEROW. . . The Now Zealand Shipping Company's Eualiinc, whioli arrived at Auckland from London; via Panama, shortly after 1 p.m. on Monday, left London on December 8 and. arrived at Panama on tho 'evening of December 26. Coaling operations were carried on through tho night and coiiso- , quently no leave was given to the troops, as the vessel resumed her voyage the next morninj.- Fine weather was experienced practically throughout the trip. The Euanine has 1600 tons of cargo for Auckland, and after discharge she will go .to Wellington and other New Zealand ports to put out the balance. Captain E. T. V '" Ninety-two days out from New York, the ship Tonawanda, 1643 tons, arrived at Auckland on Tuesday morning, as reported yesterday. Tho.vessel experienced no- ! thing , unusual on her voyage via the Panama, beyond being four, days in .her. passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific. She is unloading 620 tons of general merchandise at - Auokland. Her consignment, of general, merchandise totals 3500 tons, the remainder being for Wellington, for ,which portfire vessel; sails abouttheehd of .tho week. Her future movements are uncertain. ' AYRSHIRE'S CARGO DAMAGED. , How tho large Pederal-Sliire liner Ayrshire, with a fire burning stubbornly in No. 3 hold, made ■ a desperate dash for safety on the American coast-a short, time ago,'and escaped • disaster by a narrow margin, was told when the vessel ar< rived in Australia, ofter completing a 'voyage from London. When the outbreak occurred the Ayrshiro, then known as transport A. 33, "was on her way from Melbourne , to the United Kingdom, via Panama, and was carrying a valuable cargo of flour, frozen meat, and. general merchandise. When within three days' steaming of Newport Newß, U.S.A., the cargo in the lower compartment of No. 3 hold was found to bo well: alight, membere ■of tho crew donned-smoke-helmets and descended into the hold, but owing to the difficulty in fighting the outbreak at close quarters, their eflorta to subduo the flames were fruitless. ". Tho large steamer was sent, at full speed for Halifax. When tho burning 'hold was flooded'it was found that the damage was considerable. The insulated chambers for the carriage of frozen cargo were ruined, and new fittings had to bo installed. A large amount of cargo was destroyed. ' ■ ■ . Ecsuraing her voyage to Great Britain, the Ayrshire had another excitine experience, being attacked' by a submarine off tho Irish coast while steaming in a convoy of 42 vessels.. She eluded the U-boat, whioh was destroyed by means of depth charges dropped by destroyers. Wellington Eadio Station will to-day bo in touch with the following ships:—Maori, Mararoa, Moeraki, Tarawcra, Kent, Port Lyttelton, Suevic, Kaituna.' . . . The B. Shipping Company has received no further word of the French full-rigged ship Amiral Oecille,- 2293 tons, from New York, which was off the Mercury Islands on Tuesday. Tho vessel left New York on October 18, and goes first'to Auckland, then coming to Wellington. , The overseas steamer Dogra, which called hero to bunker coal, 6ailed yesterday afternoon for Lebu, Chile, and other Chilian and Peruvian ports, where sho will load for Eastern ports. Captain Weston, formerly in the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamers, is reported to be in command of the new Federal-Shire steamer Somerset, which will complete Homeward loading , in New Zealand portß next month. Captain Cropland, late of the Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Corinthic, is now in command of the White Star liner Ceramic the largest steamer trading south of the Line. . . . . Mr. George A. Parkcs, general agent in Australasia for tho U.S. and A. Linee Inc., has received cablo advice from New York Btatiug that the rate of freight per steamer from New York to New Zealand' ports, Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne is £8 per ton for measurement cai'eo, &l 10s. per ton for weight cargo; and to Fremantle and Adelaide £9 per ton for measurement cargo and £8 per ton for weight. The rate applies to all steamers leaving New York on-and after January 6, 1919. Cargo for Auckland will to-day be received by the Tarawera. The Calm will to-day receive careo for Wauganui. Transhipments and local cargo will today be taken by the Rosamond for Lyttelton. , Mr. E. K. Duckworth, a popular purser in the Union Company's Eervice, has resigned his position on the Moana to join the Cook Islands Trading Company, Earotonga. Mr. Duckworth, who will come ashoro from tlia Moana to-day, has been with tho Union Company for eight years, tho last two of which ho has been in , tho New Zealand-San Francisco service. Dairy produce for export will to-day reach Wellington on the Oorinna from New Plymouth. Tho vessel will return to New Plymouth to-morrow for another load, Tho Paeroa is ■ duo at Wellington from Hokitika on .Friday, and will sail on Saturday for Greymouth. Tho Manama, which left for Auckland on Tuesday night, found the weather too heavy for her to leave iho Heads, and therefore put back to Worser Bny, and returned to her berth eaiiy yesterday morning. When conditions had moderated later in the morning tho Manaroa again left for Auckland. The schooner Annie Hill is still lying idle at Lyttelton. On October 25 loading of tallow for an American nort was commenced, but when 120 tons had been taken in it was discovered that the vessel, was leaking slightly. A portion of her freight was thereupon unshipped and the defect rectified. In the meantime, however, no steps appear to have been taken towards tho completion of her cargo for her protracted voyage.
