SUMMER RACES

WELLINGTON MEETING OPENS GREAT CROWDS ATTEND EXCITING CUP CONTEST RED RIBBON AND REWI POTO DEAD-HEAT The Wellineton Racine Club's Summar Meeting was opened at Trentham' yesterday in sunehine and misj. Though ai light rain hung about "the hills all day it was not until well' on in the. afternoon that N it made itself at all unpleasant. There was a great crerwd present, and the totalieator recorded an increase of nearly £10,000 on the eum put through the machine on the correspondine day last year. This was the first ■ Weilineton race day Biiice the ending of the war, and there was a welcome return to a good train service. The Eailway Department's arrangements appeared to work very Bmoothly and satisfactorily. 'The racing was excellent, and the Cup provided one of the best of races and one of the most, exciting- finishes: Tor some days before the meeting it appeared as. though tho Eiddifbrd bracket (Menelaus, with H. Gray up, and: Mascot) would be the machine but a great trfal by Eed Eibbon brought the mare into favour'. However, on the race carde Punka and Kilmoon ware found to be bracketed, and the public eventually made these two southerners the actual favour ites.r Tho consistent'Eed Ribbon was Se' in demand, and then the Eiddiford pair The betting -was very heavy, over £10,000 being invested. "The race was a fine- contegt throughout, and *n [« field turned into, the straight most of the horses had chances. A furlong from the post Eewi Poto shot out and .left the field, but shortly afterwards Eed Eibbon got clear, and becan to overhaul Bewi Poto at a tremendous rate., Amidst a Eceno of excitement the mare got up in S to dead-heat with Bewi Poto Punka, wlm had run a good race; was third, aim Heathercote fourth. A" thing worth notiolne about Eewi- Poto's succese is the which . a horse carrying about t*e height allotted to Mm scores vpar-olds and two-year-olds. The race went to GlSung, and Warplanj beatSurV Tnne o field C o? d the la be e st handicap Bprintert conteßted the f last eventoonn n the e «d. The race went to',Nanna, winner of-tho E was on ?ewi-Poto, who dead«Si^&def,cUo,S then failed over the last bit. 1 ? P» finished strongly, and won racely by a I*!! clear of Hendra, Kiltess, aad V inter j ° Hurry Up was backed down <V> a very.j short .price in the Trial' Plate, hut after having every chance .he was third place. Fulica led for halt *;• m«e. when Paddington Green and Odla took charge, and the favourite was next. '.After- | Blow ran to the lead two furlongs \ from ; hoiue, and'she and the favourite sYiook off the others. Afterglow won nicely ft.om First Salute,"who-finished well, and.btat, the favourite by a head. PaddingU-n Green and .Cello were next. .Sardinia fen, and tho injuries ho .received necessitated:. I his destruction. A. Keed, his rider, was removed' to α-hospital. • . : There was great , excitement as the field paraded for the Cup. K. Young had the mount'-on Mascot, as A. Eeett was_tao ehaken'to ride. In the birdcage the field looked well. ■ In the preliminary Kilmoon and Kose Pink moved a trifle short, but the others were striding alone nicely. -A very bi"- v pool was on the machine, over £10,OCO being, invested, -which- is a'record fori'the club. Some- hundreds journeyed! down to see the start. At the barrier Kilmoon was on the inside, with Nobleman Heathercote, and Eowi Poto next. Client-was in the centre, and Eed Ribbon and tho Eiddiford bracket were on the ex- j treme outside. , With tho exception of Bewi Poto and Ladogeur the field' stood,' lip well. A good start was effected, all 1), but Eewi Poto, who hung a- trifle,. leaving I tho mark well. Passing the. stand the first | time Kilmoon and Heaihercote were in front, with Nobleman and Punka next, and Client bringing op the rear. The order, was much the same at the mile, where the leaders wore followed by Nobleman. Ladbgeur, and Eed Eibbon. At the Bix-furlongß the leading po3itione were •unaltered, but Battle Kong was improving his position. A turlong lurther Nobleman pulled himself up to Kilmoon and Heathercote, while shortly afterwards Ladogeur and Punka also joined the vanguard. Entering the straight tho field was buuclied, and the colours of Ladogeur, Nobleman, Kilmoon, and Eewi Poto were prominent, with Eed Eibbon just behind on the fence. A furlong from "home Eewi Poto shot out, and a little later Eed Eibbon got clear. In a great • etruggle the mare the leader, and amidst a scene of excitement they crossed the line together.'two lengths clear of Punka, Heathercote, Battle Song, and.Eoso Pink finished next in that order. The judge declared, a dead-heat, a decision that met with general approval. Menelaus an Mascot failed badly, as did Client and Snub, but the rest of the field were always prominent. Contrary to expectations the Stakes prored a good thing for Gloaming, who began smartly, and had Surveyor, who was a. hot favourite, stretched the whole way. The two-year-old found his penalty too much, and" in the finish Warplane cut him out of second money> Gloaming was always in charge, and it is evident that his sprinting ability has not been impaired by racing over longer courses. The Euapehu Handicap was another heavy betting race. "Hymarty was favourite, but Active and several of the others had good foUowings. A heavy miety rain was fallinjr while the race was run, anu over the first part it was difficult to pick up tho colours. When they entered tho straight Moorabbe and Hymarty were' together, but Active was also handy, lloorabbo and Active singled themselves out. and tho mare won by a length. Hymarty was close up third, and then came Eoyal Prince and King's Arindur. The Telegraph Handicap proved a good thing for JJauna. .- Silver-Link waa in charge till well down the straight whero she tired, and Nanna- tool; the lcnd,\nnd won nicely from Acre, who finished fast in second place.
