NAVAL SURPRISES

LARGEST BATTLESHIPS IN THE WORLD BRITAIN'S "CLASS THREE" SUPER-DREADNOUGHT By Telegraph-Press Aosoolation-Oopyright. London, January 17.

Some details are disclosed of one of the Admiralty's surprises, the "Class Three" super-dreadnoughts. One of them, tho Hood, has already been launched, and is .nearing completion, while tho Rodney and Howe are well advanced. These will be the world's largest battleships. They are only seven feet shorter than the Aquitania, and they will carry eight 15-inch guns. They are practically torpedo-proof, being fitted with a "blister cushion" against which torpedoes or mines will explode harmlessly. Their speed is about 30 knots, and they cost nearly £3,500,000 each.; Battle-cruisers of a smaller type, but faster, are being built, and two are on tho slips,— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

[The liner Aquitaiiia, a vessel of over 45,000 tons, is 869 feet long, so that the now "Class Three" ships arc 862 feet over all. No ship projected before tho war approached this great length, Britain's longest ship was \the battlocrniser Tiger (660 feet);' the Queen Elizabeth measured 600 feet. Japan's big battle-cruiser Kongo is 704 feet long, and the German battle-cruiser P-rfflinger 700 feet. The longest war-' si:ips hitherto officially described are thei latest Russian battle-cruisers, of 750 feet.]
