No. 1 Queeu's' Wharf is. the .berth allotted to tho Sydney eteanier Jloeralii, diie hero this afternoon. There are MO Baloou and 63 steerage passengers to land. SWALLOW PEOM SYDNEY/ An interesting arrival at Wellington yesterday was the eteamer Swallow from fiydney, after a good seven-day passage, with an assorted cargo of 1200 tons, including a deck load of sawn timber. All tho cargo, except .300. tons .is for Wellington. Messrs. Thomas Brown, Ltd., Union' Ohambers. are the-agents.. The. Swallow is a> rather uniaue vessel as her Reneral appearance might convey. Build in 1908 by Messrs.- W. Simons and Co., Eonfrcw. for the Rangoon Port Oommissioner3 she was for about five years a hopper bargo in their service. . For. Bimilar work in Sydney. Harbour she,was four or five years ago purchased ,hy the. Sydney Harbour Trust. A lack of local dredging, however two years aco brought about for her, continued . idleness, and'it Was while she was so. laid up that. Mr. E. G. Cowlishaw, the Sydney shipowner, two months back-chartered her for three (years, with the rights to purchase..'-At great expense - uhe was quickly fitted out as a cargo-carrier. The hopper -was cloßed and converted into a hold, with the peculiar result that for sixty feet- in .the middle of the ship thero iB a second water-tight compartment six feet inside tho hull. It is claimed that in the event of a. broadside collision the Swallow ■would practically' be an unatnkable ■ ship. As she now lies -heavily laden the. Plimsoll mark is. one ;foot aboveUhe waterline. A foremast and four Simpson ponts were stepped, and five powerful .winches installed, giving every. facility: as far as machinery is concerned for the qnick handling of cargo from a, hatch. 60ft. long and 20ft. wide, said, to be the longest in any ehip in Australasian waters. The accommodation for both officers and crow is comfortable, sanitary, «nd. .roomy. There is every convenience, and. electrio light .throughout.' • ''. ' ■'■■'■ •■ . The Swallow is on her first trip in her new capacity, and has proved a eaod sea boat. Her speed is nine., knots. Her tonnage is 859, and she lias a , 'length of 206 ft., breadth; of :33;1ft.,.- and. depth of 1 14.3 ft. She is. a steel .screw, .steamer, in command of Captain Q.' W. Muir. late of Dunedin, who. brought the now lost- Defender from Sydney to •: Greymouth eleven , years ago. ■ ' , :'-It is not yet known whether the. Swallow will load general cargo. at- this port, for Sydney or irill go to Auckland to lift timber for Sydney. , Tho intention of her. . owner is to place her in' the intercolonial trade for several trips, but beyond that nothing hae been decided. ■ .
