TAXATION CONCESSIONS IN AUSTRALIA. Consideration shown by the Commonwealth to the father and mother of the family is a substantial item in .federal finance.
Figures published on January 3 showed that maternity bonus payments since October, 1912, have amounted to £4,044,705, and £325,000 is expected to be added to the amount by the end of June. In this case the advantage is largely'the mother's. "During the six months to Decembbr 31, 62,173 maternity bonus claims were allowed, as compared with 64,185 in 1917, and 65.984 in 1916. . For tho current financial year the payment of the bonus is expected to absorb £634,000. The concession to the father is in the income tax exemptioua for 'his children under sixteen years, at the rate of £26 por annum enchv In the return for the year 1916-17, tho last available, this acknowledgment of parental duty represented the exemption of £5,756,584 from the amount of taxable income in the. Commonwealth. At one tinifc the State of Victoria made a similar allowance, but it was revoked during tho war.
