HIDE AND TALLOW SALES
The fortnightly sales of (hides and tallow were resumed yesterday by tho various brokers. Messrs. Dalgety and Co. report that they offered a "good catalogue to the usual attendance of buyers. Competition was keen for all good lines and prices were Ararat late rates. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.. Ltd., offered fairly large accumulations of bides, calfskins, and tallow. Competition was fairly good, but at a lower range of prices for most of the produce offered, with the exception of best lines of calfskins, which realised slightly higher rates than last sale. Messrs. Murray, Eoberts, and Co. offered a catalogue of 1035 hides, 477 calfskins and yearlings, the offerings mainly consisting of superior hides in very dry condition. Pjices for ox hides, -were j about on a par with la6t. sale. Cows , showed an advance of about 4d. per lb. ion tho' average. Calfskins made extreme' j prices, the firm's top price being 23d. [ The whole catalogue was cleared after an ■ animated sale. Tliero was practically no I demand for tallow, and the prices quoted I nqißt be regarded as' merely nominal. I Messrs. Levin and Co. report that they I offered'. a- large catalogue of hides and | tallow. Competition ■ was keen. Ox hides j sold on a par with last salo values. Cow I hides advanced 3d. There was a general | advance of Id. to 2d. on all inferior sorts. Calfskins .ivere firm at an advance of Id. The tallow market was firm. | The Farmers' Co-op. (Distributing Co. report that competition for practically all I kinds of hides and calfskins-if in: sound | condition tob , very keen. Ox and cow hhides ivere slightly dearer, whilst calfj akins - showed' an advance of Id. to ljd. 'per.lb on previous sale fates, and catalogues generally -were well cleared: except in the.case of faulty, lines. Tallow was somewhat negected- and the demand very restricted. The prices were 2s. to 3s. per ewt. lower for good quality. . ■ Messrs. Abraham and Williams report that they offered a larce catalogue to a full bench of buyers, who competed very keenly for everything! offered, on a par with last sale- rates.
