The Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, presi- / dent of the board, said yesterday that the price of whito pine has not been definitely settled yet by the hoard, but it would have to be considered. Members of the board were ;now on the West Coast in connection! with the coal •' inquiry, and they were making inquiries there about white_ pine supplies and prices. The investigation of the whiW pine matters would be commenced by, the board about January 24. On the question of the possibility o£ using substitutes for this timber, Mr. Mac Donald said 'that'there seemed to be some charec of the South Island beech being found suitable for uomo purposes for which white pine was now. used. There were great quantities o! this timber yi the country. The scheme advocated in some quarters of using other timbers with a veneer of whito nine was not' yet commercially practicable. • '
