EDUCATIONAL RECONSTRUCTION

Sir,—ln view of the new school year just beginning, may I venture to repeat my plea that more attention should be paid to the teaching of history in New Zealand? The many problems arising out of the war and or the peace surely demand a well-trained judgment, a controlled imagination, a sympathetic attitude towards mankind', and an intelligent patriotism and imperialism from every citizen in the Dominion and in the Empire. A thoughtful study of history gradually trains the mind and character towards a right perspective, and helps' a man to deal with new problems as they arrise. To deprive the children of New Zealand of the training offered by history, apart from the inherent interest of it, is to deny them their rightful heritage. Could not something be done (1) to allow more time for history in the school'time-table,* and (2) to provide for the training of history specialists to teach it ? Meanwhile a chart has been begun to help the teaching of history in New Zealand, and Part I of the "Study of History" can be obtained now from Whitcornbe and Tombs. Its' preface states the •'case for a more thoughtful study of history in New Zealand schools.'I—l1 —I am,' etc.,

A. M. WINTER, St. Margaret's College, Christchurch. January 12, 1919.
