REPLY OF THE MINISTER CONFERENCE NEXT MONTH '■'.'.'. Tile 'Minister ,of Railways, the Hon. ■,'M'i H. Herries, was', asked yesterday \ whether ho had anything to say in to .the statement made on be--,half-of the Railway' Locomotive Engine .Drivers, Firemen, /and Cleaners' Association, published in The Dominion , yesterday. ' Mr. Herries said that the association had been informed that he was quite ..prepared,,to meet, its representatives and discuss grievances next month, iand'that-he would, bo also conferring •with representatives of the Amalga-m-mated " Society' of, Railway Servants 1 'and the Railway Officers' Institute with a view to reaching an agreement as to tho.amendment of the schedule of the Government Railways Act, to he introduced next session. ■ The permanent wages were covered entirely by the schedule which had to be' approved by Parliament. Meanwhile, until the statutory' 'schedule nvas amended, the bonus system would be continued. This provided an additional '3s. a day throughout the second division for marTied men and 2s. a day for single men. .With the bonus of 3s. a.day, a married first-class driver received a total or . 16s. 6d. a day, which was 6d. a day higher than the average wage for a . similar position in Australia. For tlie lower grade men the wages, with the bonus, were considerably higher than ■■therates for similar.men in Australia. The question of working conditions, concluded the Minister, could not he r determined till the matter of wages vhad,been settled. '
