FOOD SUBSTITUTE SECRET

GERMAN WHO COULD NOT BE INTERNED OR REPATRIATED.-. Mr. R. Brodrick, secretary of /the British Aliens Advisory. Committee, tells of a curious case, which has come before that body:— i , "The man is a German of repatriable age, and 1 from every point of view ' ought to be repatriated, but we cannot _ do it. He has knowledge of a, certain'* chemical proceas for making a substitute for food, which we dare, not allow Germany to get hold of. His son is interned, and wo have not repatriated his wife and two daughters lest they should be able to convey' the" "secret' process to Germany, where it would be extremely useful. We cannot intern him because ho is of repatriable age, and every person of such age who is interned has the right to insist upon going back to Germany, and he wouldl undoubtedly exercise that right. By an agreement between the British and German Governments we are only allowed to retain twenty men of repatriable, age, and that .twenty, are being held. All we can do, therefore, is to keep him under supervision. I believe he is rather a nuisance to his neighbours, but they must bear it patriotically."
