THE BRITISH CABINET
PRESS OPINIONS ON THE APPOINTMENTS. London,' January 11. The papers comment thai there are few surprises in the selection of the Cabinet. Some express regret that Mr. Lloyd George has not shown more courage in going outside the routine names when filling somo of the most prominent offices, particularly the Admiralty. There are several hostile comments.upon Mr. Churchill's translation to the War Office; arid doubts are expressed as to Sir F. E. Smith's suitability for the Lord Chancellorship', All the papers approve of tho appointment' of Sir' Satyendra Sinha as Under-Secretary of State for India. The newspapers adversely criticise Mr. Churchill's promotion, which is ascribed to Mr. Lloyd George's personal friendship. It is predicted that the amalgamation of the Air Ministry with the War Office under Mr. Churchill will revive the Admiralty's antagonism, and will result in the re-establish-ment of a separate naval air force. Legal circles condemn Sir F. E. Smith's appointment as Lord Chancellor. The newspapers recall his fiery pre-war speeches in favouring the Ulster rebellion as showing his unfitness for the highest judicial post in the Empire.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
