After an illness extending over a period of twelve months, Mr. W. H. Holey, of Alexandra Street, Pnlincrslou North, passed away on January 10. Tho late Mr. lieley was well known us a diaper on the West Coast and later nt C'ourtenay Place, Wellington, lie was afterwards a traveller for Messrs. George and Doughty, of Wellington. His youngest son, Kenneth, was killed in action on September U; the eldest son, Norman, was a victim of the recent epidemic at Nelson; while another son, Walter, was wounded in November last, Mr. Heley loaves a widow and two sons and two daughters.

At the meeting of the Hutt County Council yesterday Mr. F. G. Cooper, of Silverstream, was elected chairman for the current year. ■

Mr W. J. Woods, for two years staff sergeant of tho Army Service Corps, Featherston Military Camp, has been appointed secretary of the Dannevirke Publishing Co.

Mr. M. B. Peat, head bill clerk m the Auckland branch of the National Bank, has been appointed manager of the Paparoa branch of the bank.

At a special meeting of Jupp s Band last evening two of the members, Messrs. F. Snelling and T. Pine, both of whom recently returned from the war, were each presented with a marble clock. Mr. W. Jupp, sen., who presided at the gathering, referred to the good qualities of the recipients, and those assembled sang "For They are Jolly Good Fellows."

Sir Francis Theodore Boys, who has been made a Knight Commander of the British Empire, is London manager for the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd. For the past two years, however, he has been Director of Meat Supplies to Great Britain and the Allies,, his services being specially desired by the Imperial Government. For that term Sir Krjjncis has been dissociated from the business of the company, but he will resume with his firm when the Imperial authorities have no further call for his services. Sir Francis is not a New Zeala-nder, but he spent about twenty yfars in the Dominion. He wont Home for the Now Zealand Refrigerating Company about nine years ago. -.

Dr. 0. Chilton and Mr. Charles A. Ewen have been appointed members of the Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute.

The anual report of ,the executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute refers in the following terms to the retirement of Mr. William Davidson from active participation in the work of the New Zealand Educational Institute:—"For thirty-three years he has been a tower of strength to his fellowteachers and has given ungrudgingly of his time, his houndless energy, and his great intellectual ability to the cause of education. Ho is a pastpresident of this institute, for more than twenty years a member of tho executive, and he was the founder and for twenty years the editor of the Journal of Education, Failing health, not failing interest, is the cause of his retirement, and members _ of' the institute cannot but heartily wish that he may for many years to come he able to enjoy the rest ho has so well earned, and .watch the growth of the structure of national education, in.the building up of which he has borne so strenuous a part."

Mr. E.-H. Cavell, who for the past thirteen years has been accountant at Gordon and Gotch Pty., Ltd., Wellington, was on Monday the recipient of a presentation from the Wellington staff, on the occasion of his departure for Dunedin to take up the duties of manager for the South Island branches. Mr. W. E. Jackson, general manager, made the presentation. Mr. Cavell leaves Wellington to-day for the south.
