In 1914 the maintenance in an English prison of an ordinary prisoner cost £30 Is. Id. for the year. . This rose last year to very nearly double—the actual figure being £56 13s. sd. Convicts are always more expensive than ordinary prisoners, but here again the rise is equally startling, for vmilo in 1914 tho cost to the State of one convict was £44 6s. 7d., in 1917 it was £73 4b. 7d.
These figures include food and: maintenance and all other expenses. .
While provisions and clothing have risen to nearly double their original cost, the increase is not altogether or oven principally. duo to this cause. Strange as it may seem, the real Teason is the great decrease Hn the number of prisoners and convicts which has como about since the beginning of the war. '
Tho value of each convict's work during the year 1917 canie to nearly £30, thus cutting tho actual cost.to* tho State to £43 ss.
