veterans; race. j Old-timo yachting enthusiasts answered the call of the sea on Saturday afternoon when the veterans' race was decided under the auspices of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club. A frcsli nor'- ( wester spoilt the competition which would otherwise have resulted, and only throe boats crossed the finishing line. Most of the yachts hud two ! reefs down, but the Viola, shiled liv ; Mr. Brook-Taylor was over-canvassed and sought shelter in Balena Bay. The Wairere I, sailed by Mr. C. Nelson, experienced trouble with her head sail? and mizzen, and was unable to complete the course. Mr. T. Ronayne. i who had charge of the White Heather, , also experienced trouble. During the race the 'bob stay carried away, and this compelled the yacht's skipper to withdraw from the contest. The Auckland yacht Marangi, with a handicap of Wo minutes, and sailotl by the port harbourmaster, Captain Dawson, tlio raco. She ivtis oxceedingly well handled throughout 1 th" ; race, and took the lead from the Rawene, sailed by 3fr. R.. C.'Renner about a mile from the finishing linn.
