THE LATE MR. ROOSEVELT
New York, January 8. Mr. William Taft and Mr. CSiarleS Hughes were prominent among the mourners. Mr. Taft was in tears during tho committal service. Mr. Joseph Cannon, ex-Speaker, was also visibly affected. The streets of the village were crowded with silent -mourners.. TJie Colonel's favourite hymn, "How Firm / a Foundation," was recited bj> the rector. TJjo only flowers at the grave wero those from ex-Rough Rider comrades, in the Spanish-American, war; but hundreds of wreaths filled the church.
President Wilson' lias issued a proclamation stating that Mr. Roosevelt, when President, had displayed administrative powers of a high order, and ho had distinguished himself in the Spanish war. In private life his character was one of simplicity and virtue.—> Aus.-N.Z. Cable -Assn.
