TOTAL LOSSEs'EXCEED £6000; .By Telegraph-Press Association Whakatane, January 9. A fire occurred in Whakatane shortly after 12.30' o'clock this morning, completely destroying a block of buildings consisting of the King's Picture .Theatre and the following shops :-Lury (draper), Thompson (confectioner), Green (blacksmith), Lawrence (saddler), Stark (bootmaker), Follas (bootmaker), Miss Lynch (musio class room). The fire obtained a firm hold before it was discovered, but •fortunately it was a calm night. . The,, brigade did excellent work, and prevented the,fire spreading . to other adjacent, wooden buildings. The total of losses in stock and buildings was over £8000.. The insurances aggregate .£2489 in the >.ew •Zealand, South British,- and Standard' offices.
