PREFERENCE DEMONSTRATION. (Reel January 8, 9.50 p.m.) Melbourne, January 8. A body of two hundred Toturned 6oldiers marched to the office of the Act-ing-Prime Minister (Mr. Watt) and urged the displacement of all eligibles in the Public Servioe, and tlieir replacement by returned,soldiers. ■ Mv. Watt agreed that- returned . men should have preference. All the temporary or exenipj; classes of the Public Service who were eligible had been discharged, but the eligible permanent offi-1 cere could not be discharged till Parlia-! ment altered the Public Service Act. I The deputation visited other Ministers and the Chamber of Manufacturers and demanded preference, for returned soldiers, declaring that unless the State •Government and the manufacturers fell into line the soldiers would be forced to declare them "black," and even picket the manufacturers' premises. In all cases promises were made to do all possible to assist the returned men. Tho Secretary of the Chamber of Manufacturers pointed out that the manufacturers had declared for absolute preference for returned soldiers.—Press Assn.
