FROZEN MEAT-
I'UTUItE DEVELOPMENTS. Speaking to a representative of the "Press" on Friday, the manager of one of the largest refrigerating companies in Christchiirch said that ho was of the opinion ilmt it* would be very much 6afor and generally ingre advantageous ■to all concerned if the Imperial Government continued its commandeer of the Dominion's meat until the end of next season at least. A large section of. the farmers and producers of the had alreadjf expressed their opinion that it would be advisable to extend tho meat contract with the Imperial Government to tho same period as the wool contract, which will include the 1919-1930 clip, and in this he wan entirely with them. At tho present time, he said, tho cool stores of New Zealand were full of meat, which all bolonged to the Imperial Government, and judging by the outlook fov shipping, it appeared that the position in a nutshell was that a year's supply of ship 6 would have to endeavour to tu}:o away a two years' production of meat. With tho world's markets in tho upset condition they were, an extremely complicated and almost hopeless condition, commercially speaking, would arise if tho market was now declared free and open, and it would bo exceedingly difficult for private operators to do business at ailon anything like a sound basis—any business done would be of an almost purely speculative nature. If, however, the Imperial Government continued to buy all the Dominion's meat .until the end of the 1920 season, 'that is to say until Jnne or July, 1920, there would bo a very much better chance of markets, regaining normality, and then, business could be done upon a reasonably certain basis, which would obviously be very much more satisfactory both ■ for (he producers and business men. Ho was aware of the fact that there was an agitation amongst a certain section of farmers, more particularly in tho Noi'tli Island, for a free market, but be wiuld not like to see it yet, as the position of private owners ot meat with large quantities of Imperial meat waiting shipment would not be n Wry happy one.
I i Owing to tlio dftte of closing entries for tlie HorowJieiiun A. mid P. Association's Show, to bo held on Wednesday, January 15, following; so soon utter (lie Christmas and New Year holidays, it lias been decided to extend (ho time for receiving, final entries until Thursday next, January 9. In London lectures are given annually in the Queen's Hall to London teachers by the Principal of the London .School of Choristers, and his pointß aire illustrated by his choristers. They demonstrate most of the difficulties in voice production and part singing. One of these lectures was of more utluc to me (says an Auckland wriler) '.hsiii a year's book study. At the request of tho teachers he taught a class of their own selection, three from each school, to illustrate tho method of training crude voices from the. beginning. The improvement in six weeks was magical. English hairdressers have a theory that shaving is one of tho industries which will dwindle ill post-war days, '['here are, unhappily, visible proofs to support this view, for discharged soulicrs who grow beards and whiskers to hide disfiguring scars arc steadily increasing m number. To keep them in countenance kindly folk will follow their example, according to the hairdressers, and thus an old fashion be revived.
