ECHO OF A WAR TRAGEDY
TITE LOSS OF KITCHENER.' By Tolcffraph-Prese Associatioa-Copyrlßht London, December 27. The "Manchester Guardian" publishes additional details of the wreck of H.M.h'. Hampshire. A. warrant officer who was among the survivors states that the ship sank in less than five minutes. Lord Kitchener, contrary to the earlier reports, did not appear on deck. Everything aboard had been lashed down owing to the great storm, and only one hatchway was open, and it vas blocked by those who tried to escape. An attempt wa.s made to open others, but there was not sufficient time. The informant, included in a party of eighty, clung to a raft for five hours. Seventysix men died or were swept off the raft, and tho survivors were blown ashore, numb and bleeding, in a deep rocky inlet. Two other rafts reached the shore, and there was a total of twelve survivors. All tho officers were lost. The informant is satisfied that the warship was sunk by a mine.—Aus -N.Z, Cable Assn.
