STEAMER GOES ASHORE

The following telegram was received by the Marine Department on Saturday evening from the principal lighthouse-keeper at Farewell Spit:— Small steamer, red funnel, blacktop, ashore on Spit, four miles east of lighthouse; upright position; no toply to signals if assistance required. A second message as under was received yesterday morning:— Steamer floated off Spit with flood tide. ■ ■ It is not known for certain what vessel this is, but it mjiy be the Huia (127 tons), which left New Plymouth on Friday afternoon for Taralcohe, Golden Bay.
