London may possibly follow Melbourne at some years' distance in the matter of removing railings from parks and reserves. A newspaper writer points out "tho great waste which is involved in our practice of putting iron railings round out public buildings and parks." The public gardens and parks (he says) would look far better if ih«y were open and unenclosed. It is stru.ige that we should be at such pains to shut out tho public from their own , property, and apart from this consideration the gain in aesthetic effect would justify Ihe removal of the greater part of our London railings. Six thousand children at. Accrinsjton (England) wero locked out of school in consequence of.a striko of the teachers for increased salaries.
