A CATHEDRAL OF ART
AN APPEAL TO BUSINESS MEN. Most successful men of business have a desire to devoto a portion of their wealth to tho encouragement of tho Sine arts. The fact that they may haVo missed something of tho softening and soothing benefits of literature, music, paiiicntß and sculpture,' is an incontivo to broadinindod men to endeavour to bring the study of these things within tho reach, of all, for the uplilting of tho people's thoughts and the .good of the race. The opportunity of carrying out this worthy purpose is now offered in the proposal to build in 'Wellington, where St. Shirk's Church now stands, ait Anglican Cathedral which will compare favourably with the most notable cathedrals of Great Britain and Europe. Tho new cathedral will be a repository of the history and traditions of the Dominion. Among its treasures eventually will bo busts of leading statesmen, public men, artists, poets and writers; and the names of all iscw Zealand's soldiers who fell in tho great win will be enshrined in golden letters on marble tables in the Military Memorial Chapel. It is intended that the entiro cathedral shall be built by tho free-will offerings of a people tilled with gratitude for the coming of peace. Contributions and promised sums may be spread over a period of five years, and Government Stock or War Bonds may be given. When the sum of ,£150,000 is in sight the building of the main part of the cathedral will bo possible. A gift of ,£10,01)0 will build a tower, .£7509 will build a trnnsppt, JB6OOO the Galilee porch, .EoilOO the north-west porch, iMOOO the organ, ,£3500 the morning chapel, or the groat east window, X 2, r ioo the rose window in the transept. The baptistry, to cost ,£2OOO, is already promised, also eight pillars at ,£IOOO each, but there are many pillai's in the plan. jCSOO will build an arch, and lesser sums will provide less costly, though very important parts.. The gift of any of these carries with it tho right of dedication of that portion of this cathedral of art. Intending contributions should communicate with tho hon. organising secretary, Rev. C. F.
