AUCKLAND CUP DAY. ■ , NOTES ON THE RACING. By Tolegraph'.-Speoial Correspondent. • Auckland, December 27. A feature of yesterday's racing at Ellerslio was the prompt starting. There was none of that wearisome waiting at the post which is so irritating to the public and eo trying to well-behaved horses. On two occasions horses that were unreasonably long in facing the barrier were loft behind. Tho womon ticket-sellers at tho totalisators seem to h'avo given satisfaction, though it is eaid they wore inclined to be a httlo flurried at rush times. It was. not their, fault that hundreds were shut out during the day': ..'there were not enough windows to cope .with the investors. . Among the visitors to Ellerslie on Boxing Day .were, the Hon. A. 11. Myers, Hon. W. 11. Hemes, Sir 'Francis Boll; Sir Frederick Lang, and Sir George Clifford. . Commenting on tho Auckland- Cup race, the "Herald states": "Mr. O'Connor '.did not keep the contestants long, at the post, and. he. dispatched them to', a . beautiful start. That there wjis. to.be. no loitering on the. road, was quickly made apparent for.' Ma : scot' aid Heath'e'rcote clapped on the pace at once,, and when the seventh furlong Had been-nearly completed Giendower went'up. to .assist in front. The fayourite Sasanof was placed well back at this stage, hugging the rails closely. A solid pace was .maintained round the bottom ; and, up - the back . stro.toh, when .Heathercbto tired and Glcndowor scr ;yi\ to weary of his task. A little fur ier on , Sasanof made a splendid run from the half-mile. post 'and' drew' up •to Mascot. Loud cries went ud. in his favour. Mascot, ' however, hung on gamely to her task, arid though Sasanof kept up a long-sus-tained run with characteristic gannancss his-fate'was sealed-at the Half-distance, and Mascot ran home an easy winner in front of "the' top-wdight. - The'first and the second, horses were sired by Martian, and the' , interesting fact to be related-is that they were sold as yearlings on the same afternoon nnd followed each otlieiinto the ring "at the sales of : the Kinloch youngsters offered' at- Canterbury in the spring of 1914. Mascot fell to the bid of Messrs.'E.'and V. Riddifbrd at 300gns'., while Mr. W. G. Stead purchased Sasanof for 4Qogns. Sasanof clearly had the honours of tho race, and when it is borno in mind that the time (3niin. 26sec.) is hear' the- record'for the""Ellefslie event, the strong bid ho made'for victory showed him up'' in: very attractive' colours. The. surprise of the race was furnished, by Blue Cross, who secured third place. Tho Marble Arch gelding .'is clearly a better 6tayor than, most; people thought.'■•■■'Jf is interesting .to. no.to that the whole of the placed division rank: as five-year-olds." :
